FRIDAY: The trip to Colorado was uneventful, that is always a good start for us. It took us several hours to get out of Kansas and the drive was pretty boring. We arrived at the Mountaindale Campground located in Limon, Co. about 30 minutes outside of Canon City on Wednesday, about 5:00 PM, and was parked and set up within 30 minutes. We must be getting pretty good at this. The guys worked on the connections and Charlene and I surveyed the facilities. It is a very pleasant park, lots of trees and the spaces are spacious and the ground is covered with pebbles which make the park not only very clean and level, but also excellent drainage when raining. A few mosquitoes but otherwise, very few bugs. Deer roam through the park in the early morning (at least that is what Kenny tells us as we try not to get up too early in the morning.) I’ll try to include some photos of the deer. The first night we cooked pork chops, sweet potatoes and a salad and fixed smores on an open fire. The weather was very pleasant on day 1.
Thursday we got up and had french toast and bacon for breakfast and then headed to the Royal Gorge where the Arkansas River flows about 1200 feet below. We walked across the suspension bridge and I took the zip line across. That was exciting. We have lots of pictures of the gorge but unfortunately, none of me on the zip line. (I need to hire a better photographer.) It was pretty warm during the day but the evening cooled down nicely. We finished off with home made chill and hot dogs. Played dominoes and hit the sack.
We got up really early this morning as we were heading to the Garden of the Gods, we got a good start but unfortunately so did the rain. It appeared it would be raining all day so we decided it would be a good day to hang around the campground, catch a nap, do laundry and catch up on mail. We stopped in Canon City to pick up stuff for dinner and to restock our wine supply. Tonight it is salmon on a cedar plank, baked potato and asparagus and it looks to be a good night for a fire if it doesn’t rain anymore so maybe smores for dessert.
We still have several things we want to see and do, we just hope the weather cooperates.
