Arriving in Long Beach, Washington

Friday, July 17:  The drive from Bend to Long Beach took almost 6 hours because of traffic, it was mostly interstate so was not very interesting. The nicest part of the drive was on Hwy 22 in Oregon.

Near arrival, we passed through Astoria and knew we would be coming back to visit it in more detail. We had to drive over the Columbia river on the Astoria, Megler bridge to Washington. It is over 4 miles long and on the Astoria side, it is 400 feet above the water and is currently being worked on so it is currently down to one lane for part of the bridge so it took awhile to get across.

We arrived at the Pacific Holiday RV Resort about 6:30 PM. We used our Coast to Coast membership so our rate is about $14.00 per day and we plan to be here for 4 days. It includes 30 amp, water, sewer, cable but still no wi-fi. It is located right on the Pacific and is a well maintained park. All of the spaces are black topped and mostly level however some issues with tree roots, so not completely level. The spaces are very narrow and while they do have some pull through spots, ours is a back in so it was a bit of a challenge in getting it backed in just right. (SbS (Sidebar by Steve) – Getting used to backing in this 29′ RV, but did a good job this time with help from my navigator/parking attendant). There are trees on each side so we have plenty of shade but wanted to use the awning. Our patio awning hangs over top of our neighbors window awning but they don’t touch so all is well. Also, trying our new Dish satellite system discovered that that tree was a really good block for access to the satellite. Oh well, will try again later.

Our neighbors are very nice, they are from Canada and gave us a few ideas on some additional places to consider. Our original plan was to park in Long Beach and drive back over to Portland and spend a couple of days, staying overnight in a hotel. However, the traffic around Portland is so heavy, and it would probably be a 3 hour drive one way, we decided there was more than enough in the area were at to keep us busy so we will rethink if we want to try to make Portland again on this trip.

We took a walk around the park, it is quite full and what few spaces that are open, there is a line up of RV’s on the way in. There is one small section dedicated for tents, it looks like tent city, but otherwise, all other spaces are Rvs. We than took a walk down to the beach, it’s about 1/3 mi. walk to the beach but not too bad as we don’t have to walk over sand dunes, but still a good distance. The beach is very nice, sunset is not until about 9:00 PM and we were too tired to wait around to see it tonight so we will plan to do that tomorrow night. We did enjoy the sunset from the RV, the sky was very pretty.
